By car

Vitoria-Gasteiz is located in the middle of the Llanada Alavesa, on the road that joins Madrid to the rest of Europe, via the N-1 highway.
The city is under one hour from Bilbao, one hour from Pamplona, two hours from Santander, three hours from Zaragoza and less than four hours from Madrid.

By plane

Vitoria Airport (VIT)

Vitoria airport (VIT) is located 8 km. from Vitoria-Gasteiz, in a convenient location just 45 minutes from Bilbao (58 km.); and the region of Rioja Alavesa and cities like Hondarribia (121 km.) or San Sebastián (116 km.) in just over one hour. Locally it is also known as the Foronda Airport.

  • Connections: there are regular flights that connect with the airports of Seville, Alicante, Málaga, Palma de Mallorca, Brussels-Charleroi and Milan-Bergamo with the airline Ryanair.
  • Bus service: connects the airport with the city. More information on special buses to the airport

Bilbao Airport

If you come via Bilbao airport you can take the urban bus service (Bizkaibus) that takes you to the main Bus Station, and from there the journey to Vitoria-Gasteiz takes less than one hour.

By bus

There is a direct bus departing from Bilbao and arriving at Vitoria-Gasteiz. Services depart hourly, and operate every day. The journey takes approximately 55 min.

The best way to get around Vitoria Gasteiz

By bike

Exploring the city by bicycle is an excellent method. Due to its predominantly flat terrain (excluding the Mediaeval Quarter, situated on an elevated position), the city is highly conducive for efficient navigation and adherence to designated cycling paths. Presently, there exist over 160 kilometres of bicycle paths.

By tram

The current network has two lines: Ibaiondo-Unibertsitatea and Abetxuko-Florida. Before getting on a tram, buy a ticket at one of the ticket machines (tickets expire after 50 minutes).

By bus

The municipal bus network offers the following services:

  • Daytime service, with a frequency of every 10 minutes
  • Night service (Gautxori): bus lines during night hours that operate on Fridays, Saturdays and holiday eves, every 30 minutes.
  • BEI (Smart Electric Bus), with a frequency of every 7 minutes.
